Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park and arguably its most atmospheric, a vast wilderness of dense dry-zone jungle, scrubland, and the distinctive natural lakes called ‘villus’ that define its landscape and reliably attract wildlife to its shores. The park is regarded as one of the finest places in Sri Lanka to spot the elusive leopard, with sightings relatively frequent along its sandy tracks and at the water’s edge in the early morning and late afternoon hours.
