Minneriya National Park is famous throughout the wildlife world for an annual spectacle known as ‘The Gathering’, believed to be the largest congregation of Asian elephants on earth, where several hundred elephants converge on the shores of the Minneriya Tank between June and October as the surrounding jungle dries and the reservoir becomes the primary water source for miles around.
