30,000 Years of Human History

Journey to the Pahiyangala (Fa-Hien Cave), one of South Asia’s largest natural caves and among the world’s oldest documented human settlement sites, with evidence of habitation dating back over 30,000 years. A guided exploration reveals prehistoric rock shelters, ancient tools, and haunting geological formations. A nature walk through the surrounding forest reserve is followed by an authentic village homestay dinner.

Yakagala Trek, Forest Falls & Rainforest Picnic

Venture to the adventurous Yakagala site for exhilarating rock climbing and hiking through rugged terrain, spotting wildlife and photographing dramatic landscapes along the way. In the afternoon, discover nearby forest waterfalls tumbling into natural bathing pools – perfect for a refreshing swim surrounded by lush jungle. Enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch in the rainforest before continuing to Tangalle for the night.

Gem Mines of Rathnapura

Travel to the Idamgoda-Heraniyawaka gem trading area, where traditional gem buying and selling practices have operated for generations. Observe the meticulous process by which experienced traders identify and value raw gems. Visit small gem pits and polishing workshops to understand how rough stones become finished gemstones. Move on to Rathnapura, the City of Gems, for an overnight stay amid the emerald hills.

Mining Experience & Bopath Ella

Explore the Rathnapura Gem Museum to learn about Sri Lanka’s world-famous blue sapphires, rubies, cat’s eyes, and alexandrites. Join a guided gem mining experience and visit traditional mining pits to observe the fascinating extraction process. In the afternoon, visit the beautiful Bopath Ella Waterfall, whose unusual leaf-like shape offers scenic photo opportunities and peaceful moments in stunning natural surroundings.

UNESCO Rainforest Exploration

Enter the extraordinary Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Asia’s last surviving lowland tropical rainforests. Led by a knowledgeable local naturalist, explore trails rich in endemic birds found nowhere else on Earth, as well as rare butterflies, geckos, and purple-faced leaf monkeys. Visit forest streams and hidden waterfalls deep within the canopy’s cooling emerald embrace.

Waterfalls & Traditional Village Crafts

Proceed to the majestic Kirindi Ella Waterfall, one of Sri Lanka’s tallest cascades, dropping dramatically through forested hillsides. Visit a nearby tea estate for a curated tour and tasting experience. Explore a traditional village immersed in living crafts – gem cutting and polishing, intricate wood carving, and Ayurvedic treatments prepared from locally harvested herbs. An optional spa session completes a richly textured day.

Transfer at dawn to Udawalawe National Park for a spectacular jeep safari, renowned for its extraordinary elephant population that roams freely across open grasslands in remarkable numbers. Spot water buffalo, mugger crocodiles, and countless birds. Visit the Elephant Transit Home, an ethical rehabilitation centre for orphaned elephant calves. The afternoon offers a cultural village experience with a traditional lunch and a storytelling session.
